As a Production Designer, it is most important to be able to convey my ideas as well as clarify the ideas of others through drawings or models.
Basically, what drawings do for me is answer the question: "Is this what you meant?" or: "This is what I had in mind, what do you think?"
Being able to render my own drawings also aids me when it comes to figuring out camera angles and logistical problems such as having to hide things on a location with set pieces.
With my background in set construction and my experience on set, I won't draw something that can't be done or isn't within the budget. These are factors that sometimes fall through the cracks with an art director that has to hire an artist who then has to render something based on third hand information.
By doing most of the initial drawings myself it takes away the weak link. I know what to draw because I have been to the site. I base my drawings on first-hand information. It is also handy to be able to stand next to the director on a location or sit with him in a meeting and sketch a rough idea so we are a united front.
